It never ceases to amaze me how here in Torbay we are truly blessed with community spirit. Organisations, individuals, groups, churches and charities are always looking out for opportunities to support one another in so many ways.
At their recent Prom Night, held on Brixham Quay, Brixham Town Band were joined by The Orpheus Male Voice Choir and soloist Jan Lobb for a wonderful evening‘s entertainment in aid of Brixham Does Care. My wife, Josephine, and I duly attended, accompanied by fellow long-standing volunteer, Robert Jinks, in order to carry collection buckets. Four weeks later we were invited back to attend the last summer concert and were presented with a cheque for the magnificent sum of £340 by band Musical Director, Phil Cleave.
On Saturday 23rd September, Missin’ Tackle Shanty Crew is hosting a Singathon at the Brixham Christian Community Centre in Fore Street in aid of Rowcroft Hospice, from 10 am to 10pm. Entry is FREE. Refreshments are available throughout the day. It is hoped that people will pop in and out to enjoy the different genres of music on offer and to make a donation.
Guidance Performance times, in order of appearance, are: –
10.00 am – Brixham Harmony, Jubilee, One Accord, Riviera Singers, Village Voices;
1.00 pm – Jan Lobb, Paigntontonics, Quay Harmony, The Contraband, The Cox Trio;
4.00 pm – Martyn Paddon, Newton Abbot Ukulele Club, Street Harmony, The Jays;
7.00 pm – All Hands On Deck, Time & Tide, Sea Hounds;
9.00 pm – Missin’ Tackle Shanty Crew; 9.30 pm – Jam Buddies.
Those who attend Brixham Does Care’s regular Singalongs in the Town Hall or my visits to the Memory Cafes at Paignton, Goodrington and Totnes, together with my concerts for the Gateway Club, Douglas House and other local residential care homes, will be familiar with the songs I sing. Between 4.00 and 5.00pm they will range from Dave Edmunds to Chuck Berry, with Rod Stewart, Roy Orbison and Tina Turner somewhere in between. Hope to see you then.
Alasdair Anderson and his crew of volunteers hope as many people as possible are able to support Rowcroft’s vital work. None of us knows whether one day in the future we might need their help.
