No room in the inn for BDC Christmas Singalong
WHEN Brixham befriending charity Brixham Does Care held its annual Mince Pie Christmas Singalong, there was literally “no room in the inn” for anyone else at the Brixham Does Care Cafe. In true traditional style, on the 10th day of December, the packed audience was treated to 90 mince pies mincing, 40 seniors singing, 40 children chanting, 4 “wenches” serving, 3 teachers calling, 2 turtle doves (dancing on the roof opposite)…..but no sign of a partridge or, indeed, a pear tree! Tesco & Co. kindly donated the delicious mince pies, while the talented choir from Furzeham Primary School delighted all those present with their sparkling performance and impeccable behaviour. MC Martyn Paddon was supported by his wife, Josephine, and her fellow “serving wenches” Eileen, Julia and Chris, all resplendent in their Christmas party attire. The sum of £211 was raised towards the charity’s funds and everyone went home smiling, completely unable to stop singing along to the songs they had shared.
On the following Friday, 14th, the Christmas fun moved around the corner to the Scala Hall, where a tasty supper from prize-winning David’s Fish & Chip shop, complemented by even more mince pies, was served up by the Brixham Does Care staff members. The evening entertainment came courtesy of Brixham Town Band, ably conducted by Phil Cleave, and the audience was once again encouraged to join in singing carols and Christmas songs. Some brave souls even took to the dance floor and we all enjoyed the favourite “Snow Waltz”, which required the audience and band alike to risk indigestion each time Phil signalled everybody to stand up and sit down again! Great fun. A further sum of £1,006 was raised on the night. Thanks must go to everyone involved for a really wonderful evening.
Brixham Does Care is ringing the changes as it rounds off its 40th anniversary year with two special events as part of its Christmas celebrations.
The annual Mince Pie Christmas Singalong on Monday 10th December 2018, previously held in the morning at the Scala Hall, now switches to an afternoon event in the Brixham Does Care Café, from 1.45 to 3.45pm. Doors open at 1.15pm. Click here for copy of details poster. The children of Furzeham Primary School Choir are once again scheduled to perform and a raffle will be held during the interval. Tickets at £4 include a free cuppa and a mince pie and are available from the BDC Office next door in the Town Hall, 01803 857727. Everyone is invited to go along and sing along with hosts Martyn & Josephine Paddon for an afternoon of fun and entertainment. Feel free to take along your air guitar. Numbers are limited, therefore pre-purchased tickets are advisable.
On Friday 14th December 2018 at 6.30pm comes the Christmas Big Band Night at the Scala Hall, with entertainment by the Brixham Town Band and a supper of Fish & Chips* included. Tickets £12 from the BDC Office. (* Alternatives available). Fancy dress to both events is optional.
The recent “Memories Are Made Of This” variety show at the Berry Head Hotel raised £839 towards much-needed funds, and the charity wishes to say a big “Thank You” to everyone concerned in putting on this annual event. Also to those who regularly attend each year. The sell-out audience was hugely entertained by local magician Gareth Foreman, Totnes School Of Dance, cover band Pendulum 5, female vocalist Tina Shiraz, and co-hosts Martyn Paddon and Jim Hopkinson. Highlight of the evening came when the primary school children, appearing as the Furzeham Performing Arts Group, lit up the Mulberry Room with their enthusiasm, energy, colourful costumes and props as they delivered a medley of songs from their favourite musicals.
