Today (20th sep 2018) at Brixham Does Care’s 40th Celebration Liz Davenport, Interim Chief Executive from the Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust and BDC Member Maureen Gilbert unveiled a plaque in memory of our founder Joyce Woolly-Lane. Joyce Woolley-Lane identified loneliness and isolation amongst the people of Brixham so her husband and friends started the Brixham Befrienders in her home in Furzeham.
It has to be said the problems of 40 years ago are little changed from those of today, and at that time they recognised the needs of people who were isolated and lonely and offered support. They faced many of the same issues as we do, finding funding, rent increases and looking for more volunteers. Same problems, different times. BDC’s initial concept was to help people who are lonely and their aim was achieved and still is today. BDC has grown from strength to strength and we are looking forward to the next 40 years.
